Spanish authorities have released the autopsy results for James “Jimmy” Gracey, but a renowned forensic expert has reacted strongly to the findings, declaring there is “A PROBLEM.” According to the expert, Jimmy’s death was not a simple case of drowning, as the injuries on his body clearly reflect a different CAUSE.
The tragic disappearance and subsequent death of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Alabama, has ignited a firestorm of skepticism from forensic experts who question the rapid conclusions drawn by Spanish authorities. Gracey, who vanished in the early hours of March 17, 2026, during a spring break trip to Barcelona, was found dead two days later near a pier in the city’s Port Olimpic area. While the local government and police have moved quickly to categorize the incident as a tragic accident fueled by intoxication, Joseph Scott Morgan, a seasoned forensic professional, remains unconvinced by the official narrative.
Morgan, an applied forensics associate professor at Jacksonville State University with decades of experience in high-profile death investigations, believes the timeline and the physical evidence presented by the Spanish authorities do not align with scientific reality. Speaking with Fox News Digital, Morgan highlighted several inconsistencies that suggest the investigation may have been rushed to protect the city’s reputation as a premier global tourist destination.
The official account posits that Gracey left a popular tourist bar after midnight and somehow wandered toward the treacherous, rocky shoreline of the Mediterranean. Early reports suggested he might have been with an unidentified individual, though that detail remains murky. “So you have a young man leaving a bar in the middle of the night, or certainly after midnight,” Morgan noted. “Initially it was thought he was seen leaving with someone, but we’re not quite sure about that now. He’s near an area that’s quite slippery, with rocks protruding out into the water. Could he have fallen off the rocks? Certainly that’s a possibility.”

However, the “possibility” of a fall does not explain the specific nature of the injuries reported in the Spanish press. Authorities have claimed that Gracey suffered various injuries over a period of several hours, describing them as bruising. For a forensic scientist like Morgan, who began his career at the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office in New Orleans in 1985 before becoming a senior investigator in Atlanta’s Fulton County, this description is a major red flag.
“The Spanish government, or at least their newspaper, is saying he sustained multiple injuries over the course of — and they described these as bruises — many hours, and scientifically, that doesn’t make sense,” Morgan explained. “You can be insulted [by] bumping into rocks once you’re dead or after you’ve died, and you’ll get little indentations in the body, little injuries, if you want to call them that, marks, as we call them, from hitting sharp rocks, but you won’t get bruising. That’s a problem for me.”
Bruising, or ecchymosis, requires a functioning circulatory system; it is a vital reaction that occurs when blood is forced into the surrounding tissue while a person is still alive. If the injuries were sustained over several hours as the authorities suggest, it implies a prolonged period of trauma while Gracey was still living, which contradicts the simple “accidental fall and immediate drowning” theory.
Furthermore, the status of Gracey’s personal effects raises questions about the motive behind his disappearance. While his wallet was found intact with cash and credit cards, a necklace he habitually wore is missing. In a confusing twist, authorities later revealed they recovered Gracey’s phone from a suspect in a completely unrelated case. This suggests that even if the death was “accidental,” there was some level of third-party interaction with Gracey or his belongings around the time of his death.
Morgan is particularly critical of the speed with which the Spanish government reached its conclusions, especially regarding toxicology. In cases involving young tourists in nightlife hubs, the possibility of “spiking” is a primary concern for investigators. “The government, I guess through the press, is making claims relative to their findings of his death, and they’re missing a big piece of the puzzle, because everybody wants to know, was something put in his drink?” Morgan asked. “Was he drugged? For example, with an anesthetic, something that would lower inhibitions and make him more easily controlled.”

Toxicology results typically take weeks to process accurately, yet the narrative of an intoxicated student wandering off was disseminated almost immediately. Morgan argues that without a full toxicology screen, any declaration of “accidental death” is premature. The presence of substances like scopolamine or other sedatives could change the legal complexion of the case from a tragic accident to a criminal homicide or robbery gone wrong.
The logistical challenges of the investigation have only increased now that Gracey’s body has been returned to the United States. Harles Valles, Communications Director for the Mossos d’Esquadra—the Catalan regional police—confirmed that the body was repatriated on Tuesday. This move effectively ends the possibility of a “clean” secondary autopsy on American soil.
“Now, the big problem is that his body was prepared before it left Spain to come here, okay? We don’t know what other organ samples they were able to get,” Morgan said. “The most important thing is that toxicology cannot be done here. The toxicology samples that were taken in Spain are going to be critical.” When a body is embalmed or prepared for international transport, the chemical changes often destroy or mask the presence of drugs or toxins that would have been evident shortly after death. Morgan had previously advised that the family should seek an independent expert, but the window for an untainted examination may have closed. “In my opinion, it would be in the family’s best interest to have Jimmy’s autopsy conducted by a certified forensic pathologist, and they should hire that person to do this,” he stated.
Beyond the medical discrepancies, Morgan suspects a more cynical motive for the rush to judgment: the preservation of Barcelona’s multi-billion-dollar tourism industry. As a city that hosts millions of visitors annually, reports of a dangerous criminal element targeting American students could have devastating economic consequences.
“Barcelona is a tourist destination,” Morgan observed. “There are millions of people there right now, and a large portion of them are on vacation. I have friends in England who love to go to Spain, they love to go to Barcelona. And yeah, that’s their lifeblood.”
The tension between a thorough criminal investigation and the need to maintain public order and tourist confidence is a phenomenon Morgan has seen before. By framing the incident as a self-inflicted accident caused by “partying too hard,” the local government shifts the liability away from the city’s safety standards and onto the victim.
“Yeah, I get it, you know, they don’t want to upset the customers, and for them to try to smooth this over this early on makes me raise an eyebrow, I have to be honest with you,” Morgan concluded.
As a memorial service was held at the Theta Chi fraternity house at the University of Alabama, the community remains in mourning, and the Gracey family is left with more questions than answers. While the Spanish police may consider the case reaching a natural conclusion, forensic experts like Morgan argue that until the science matches the story, the “accident” in Port Olimpic remains a mystery shrouded in procedural haste.
