HEARTBREAKING: A close-up look at the funeral of 8 children in the shocking LOUISIANA massacre; 8 small caskets lined up during the memorial service. MOST NOTABLE is the painful appearance of the 3 young mothers, whose current states are truly devastating
EIGHT WHITE CASKETS AND A NATIONโS GRIEF: FAREWELL TO THE โETERNAL EIGHTโ OF THE LOUISIANA MASSACRE
Shreveport, Louisiana โ Under the somber, gray skies of a Saturday morning in early May, the city of Shreveport seemed to hold its breath. On May 9, 2026, just one day before Motherโs Day, thousands gathered at Summer Grove Baptist Church. They did not come to celebrate; they came to witness one of the most haunting sights in modern history: eight pristine white caskets, so small they broke the heart at a glance, lined up in a seemingly endless row before the sanctuary.
This was the funeral for eight childrenโranging in age from 3 to 11โvictims of the horrific massacre on April 19, 2026. A tragedy of domestic violence perpetrated by their own father, Shamar Elkins, in a fit of inexplicable rage.
Dreams Silenced in Their Sleep
The tragedy unfolded in the early morning hours of a Sunday three weeks ago in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. According to police reports, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins launched a shooting spree at two different residences. At the first location, he critically wounded his ex-wife, Christina Snow. He then moved to a home on West 79th Street, where his current wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, was staying with the children.

In a state of frenzy, Elkins opened fire on the children while they were fast asleep in their bedrooms. Eight lives were taken far too soon: Jayla Elkins (3), Shayla Elkins (5), Kayla Pugh (6), Layla Pugh (7), Markaydon Pugh (10), Sariahh Snow (11), Khedarrion Snow (6), and Braylon Snow (5).

The suspect later died following a high-speed pursuit with police, leaving behind a shattered community and mothers grappling with a pain that defies description.
The Homegoing of the โEternal Eightโ
At yesterdayโs service, the community dubbed the children โThe Eternal Eight.โ From the early hours of the morning, mourners stood in lines stretching for blocks, waiting hours to pay their final respects. Inside the church, the air was thick with sorrow, yet permeated by a profound sense of reverence.
The eight caskets remained closed, each topped with a shimmering gold crown and bouquets of pure white lilies. Beside each casket stood a large portrait of the child it held: some smiling, some dancing, some clutching favorite toys. These vibrant images of life stood in stark, painful contrast to the silence of the small vessels before them.

Three mothersโChristina Snow, Shaneiqua Pugh, and Keosha Pugh (mother of Markaydon)โsat in the front row. Shaneiqua, who survived being shot nine times, appeared with scars still visible on her body. Keosha Pugh attended in a wheelchair, having suffered a broken pelvis after jumping from a roof to escape the gunfire. Dressed in all white, they stared ahead at their children in a silence that echoed through the hall.
Nicknames and Unfinished Lives
The funeral program was more than just formal eulogies; it was a collection of stories about the childrenโs brief but impactful lives.
- Jayla (3), affectionately known as โJaybae,โ was the baby of the group who loved to be held and never wanted to leave her sisters’ sides.
- Kayla (6), or โK-Mae,โ was remembered for her love of styling her dolls’ hair.
- Markaydon (10), nicknamed โK-Bug,โ was described as a protector who took pride in helping his grandmother with chores and watching over the younger ones.
- Layla (7) was characterized as โbright, bold, and full of love,โ a child who delighted in filming TikTok videos with her siblings.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux choked back tears as he read a proclamation: โThe presence of these children was a gift. Their departure leaves a void in the heart of every citizen in this city that can never be filled.โ
A Wake-Up Call on Domestic Violence
The funeral drew national attention, transcending local grief. Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, a survivor of gun violence, was in attendance to stand in solidarity. Her presence served as a stark reminder that the Shreveport tragedy is not an isolated incident, but part of a national epidemic of gun violence and domestic abuse.
U.S. Representative Cleo Fields addressed the congregation: โThis pain does not belong to Louisiana alone. It belongs to the entire nation. We must act to protect our children so that small caskets like these never have to be lined up again.โ
Bishop Bernard Kimble sought to offer solace during his sermon: โRegardless of how you feel today, know that God is still there. Grief is but a season, but the love these children had for us is eternal.โ
The Final Farewell
Following the three-hour service, a procession of seven black hearses led the way to Forest Park West Cemetery. Three city buses were commissioned to transport the hundreds of community members who followed the cortege.
As the caskets were carried out of the church, the crowd outside erupted into a chant: โTake care of our babies!โ The sound of weeping broke out uncontrollably as the smallest casket was loaded into the lead hearse.
This tragedy fell on the eve of Motherโs Day weekendโa cruel coincidence. Instead of receiving flowers and embraces from their children, three mothers in Shreveport spent the weekend placing white roses upon their childrenโs graves.
The April 2026 Shreveport massacre will be remembered for years to come, not just as a dark criminal chapter, but as a haunting lesson on the consequences of delayed intervention in domestic violence. Eight little souls are now at rest, but the question of childrenโs safety within their own homes remains a shadow looming over the American heartland.
