HOUSTON, TEXAS — In the public eye, Matthew and Thy Mitchell were considered an admirable model of success. Matthew was the CEO behind the renowned restaurant chain Traveler’s Table, while Thy was a powerful fashion entrepreneur with the well-known brand Foreign Fare.

The incident was discovered on May 4, 2026, after relatives and a nanny were unable to contact the family for over a day. When Houston police arrived for a welfare check and were forced to breach the door, they found the entire family deceased.

In 2019, Thy and Matthew opened Traveler’s Table, inspired by their global travels and the belief that food is a “language that needs no translation.” By 2023, she launched Foreign Fare. A year later, the couple opened Traveler’s Cart, a fast-casual model celebrating global street food, including dishes tied to Thy’s Vietnamese childhood. She once shared:

Thy also served on the board of the Houston chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association and even hosted a board meeting at Traveler’s Table just one week before her death.

Her final social media posts are now gut-wrenching: a video with her daughter Maya picking out a dress for her sister’s wedding, and a playful clip about how she and Matthew would grow old together but “still look young because we’re Asian.” At that time, everything was joyful. Now, they are memories that bring pain but are cherished forever.

Everyone has dark corners in their lives, but why that darkness was allowed to overshadow the bright future of a successful young family is perhaps something only those involved truly understood.
